Program Update February 2012

Two brand new Husquvarna machines were sent to Timor. Unfortunately these were never received (which does happen from time to time.) Sewaid is still planning to do some work in this area where lots of Rotary projects are being undertaken.

Program Update February 2011

Staying at our home this week we have had Judy Chanaud, who lives in East Timor 9 months of each year where she organises water purification programs for the remote and very poor area of Oecusee. We are looking at a possible Sewaid programs there.

Timor Fabric Donation

An update on the recently donated fabric:

The ladies associated with Turramurra Rotary Club were very pleased to receive all the fabric that we were given. This fabric was then cut, washed, dried and then ironed. As you can imagine this was no small job and finding space to dry the lengths of fabric proved quite a challenge in wet weather as can be seen from these photos.

It will be made into clothing to assist the mothers and babies of the Alola Foundation in East Timor where it will be very much appreciated by those in greatest need. Again our heartfelt thanks to Ray Cross at Needleworx in Mackay Qld who went to a lot of trouble to pack and send the bolts of fabric to us.

Timor

We were recently asked to supply some threads for a sewing program in Timor and thanks to one of our sponsors we are about to send a box of several thousand new spools of assorted colours. Our contact, Marie Richardson took this over for us and reported that it was very excitedly received.

In the future we may look at organising our own program in Timor.

Tonga

A HEART-WARMING STORY

Some time ago we sent a machine and some supplies to Tonga at the request of Marie Richardson an Australian Aid Volunteer. Marie has just recently returned to Tonga and reported this story to us.

"Our sewing machine was given to a lady who is the main sewer for a whole village. Her previous machine had broken down and couldn't be repaired. Since receiving our machine this lady has sewn all the uniforms for the school children, nurses uniforms for the hospital, and countless other projects. By charging a small amount for her sewing, over a 2 year period she managed to save up enough to put a deposit on a tractor for her husband, who now in turn ploughs all the village farms, and by charging a small fee for these services he is paying off the tractor."

Isn't it wonderful just how far one little sewing machine can go when put in the right hands.
